Diagnosis Merger

Two hospitals will merge on the South-coast of England within the next twelve month time frame. Exciting for some, a headache for others, both hospitals must continue to focus on day to day care of people coming through its doors on a minute to minute basis. A small group of individuals put on a charity show from time to time on an annual basis raising money for the hospitals and their patients. Today I took this to help publicise the event which takes place in a few days time for its staff and their family & friends.

Diagnosis Merger

Nikon D700 Nikkor 70-200mm f2.8 Lens @ 90mm f/8.0 1/100th sec ISO800
Vibration Reduction On. Camera and flashes all set to manual.

3x SB900: one on a stand camera right with diffuser on the adjacent balcony, one with a white Lastolite shoot through umbrella held by my secretary Carley [not in her job description] angled precariously over the balcony just above their heads out of shot to camera right, and one through a small Lastolite soft box held by one of our junior doctors Holly low down on the stairwell below camera left as a fill light.

Technical issues led to failure of triggering of the flashes with the infra red trigger SU800 and even with a PC cable to one of the SB900: I therefore triggered all three flashes with the on camera flash setting them off through their individual slave SU4 function.

The round window to the left had nurses looking on amused at the spectacle from their offices: unfortunately this was easily picked up by the camera in shot as the interior office lights were on. This required some editing within Lightroom to blacken the window.

The image was opened in Lightroom 3.6 and edited - with, in addition to the changes above, slight cropping, and white balance adjustment.

Learning points for me today:
  • Check your gear before a shoot
  • Look into all four corners of the viewfinder & check to see what the camera sees
